
The applications are in, and Participatory Budgeting is a go for tomorrow night (Tuesday June 17). Together, we’ll award $50,000 of District 5’s capital fund. Participatory budgeting gives people a direct say in how our money is spent.
If you haven’t been to participatory budgeting before, the way it works is all the groups setup science fair style. Residents of District 5 can then circulate to learn more about the proposed projects, and vote on which ones they want to see funded. You must pick five projects for your ballot to be valid. Everyone who lives in District 5 can vote, including kids. Here’s the list of project:
- Back to the Sea Society, $5,000:
Technology upgrades for education programs and animal care at the Touch Tank - Banook Canoe Club, $5,000:
Banook is transitioning away from using gasoline engines on the lake is looking to purchase three electric boat motors - Bangladesh Community Association of Nova Scotia, $5,000:
Rental supplies for events including sound system, tents, tables, etc at the Victory Day Bijoy Dibosh at Alderney Landing - Bangladesh Community Association of Nova Scotia, $5,000:
Fence, garden tools, lumber, soil, lawn mower at the Guy Jacob Community Garden on Jamieson Street - Bide Awhile Animal Shelter, $5,000:
Surgical procedures and medications for mother cats in the North Woodside shelter’s Mom’s and Babies Program - Common Roots Urban Farm, $4,715:
A new shed, tool closet, and water catchment for the garden on the grounds of the Nova Scotia Hospital in North Woodside - Dartmouth Natal Day Road Race, $4,000:
Supplies for the annual race such as bins, power cords, safety vests, finish line arch, signage etc - Dartmouth Players, $10,000:
Electrical upgrades for theatre lighting at the Player’s new home in Stairs Memorial Church - North Grove, $10,000:
Lumber for broken garden beds, new accessibility ramps, and upgrades to the playground - North Woodside Community Centre, $10,000:
Upgrades to the Women’s Bathroom including replacing stalls that date back to early 1990s, floors, and painting. - Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, $10,000:
Kitchen upgrades and renovations to support Souls Harbour Rescue Mission, Mobile Food Market and Parish’s food programs at St. Anthony’s in Dartmouth North - Park Avenue Community Oven, $5,000:
Safety equipment, accessibility upgrades and supplies to run the Community Oven on the Dartmouth Common - South End Baptist Church, $1000:
New sewing machines for the community sewing program at South End Baptist Church
Voting will take place on Tuesday, June17 from 6:00 – 8:00 at the Findlay Community Centre on Elliot Street.
